VANA and RECIPO in strong collaboration on packaging, batteries, and electronics

It should be easier for businesses covered by several different producer responsibilities to bear the administrative burden. Therefore, VANA, which is the largest Danish Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO) for packaging, and Recipo, the leading Danish Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO) in the Nordics in the electronics field, are now collaborating to simplify and create a more efficient handling of the producer responsibilities for businesses.

The overall purpose of producer responsibility is to motivate companies towards greener solutions. When companies have to register, report, and pay for specific goods and materials that they put on the market, it becomes economically advantageous to choose more sustainable approaches.

In Denmark, there are seven different producer responsibilities, and it is not uncommon for companies to be covered by more than one producer responsibility. Therefore, the producer responsibility organisations VANA and Recipo have now joined forces to offer a comprehensive solution for packaging, electronics, and batteries.

It is our clear impression that Danish companies prefer a simple and secure solution where they can collectively address their various producer responsibilities – handled by collective organisations that are experts in their respective areas. This is what we offer them now.

The reporting burdens many companies

When the extended producer responsibility for packaging comes into effect in Denmark on October 1, about 7,000 companies will be affected. Soon, all companies that place packaging on the Danish market will be responsible for the packaging throughout its entire lifecycle - even after the packaging is empty and sorted as waste by the end user.

In addition to batteries and electronics, there is already producer responsibility for cars, filters for tobacco products, and single-use plastic products. A collective producer responsibility scheme - such as VANA and Recipo - offers to manage one or more producer responsibilities for its member companies, allowing members to focus instead on their core business.

VANA is thus Denmark's largest collective scheme for packaging, while Recipo is the leading partner in the Nordic region for producer responsibility for electronics and batteries.

Many companies emphasize that the paperwork surrounding sustainability has become so extensive that it creates obstacles for everyday work. Our collaboration with VANA means that companies can report their sales of batteries, electronics, and packaging in one place.

Simple and effective reporting system

Companies covered by producer responsibility in Denmark - whether related to electronics, packaging, or both - must pay for the collection, sorting, and recycling of the quantities they market. In addition, they must register with Dansk Producentansvar (DPA) and continuously report sales and waste quantities accurately.

The newly established collaboration between VANA and Recipo means that companies with multiple producer responsibilities only need one agreement moving forward to report their sales of batteries, electronics, and packaging. This simplifies and creates a more efficient handling of producer responsibility.

More than 2,000 Danish companies are already covered by the producer responsibility for electronics and batteries. From October 1, 2025, about 7,000 companies will be subject to producer responsibility for packaging. The new producer responsibility for packaging is expected to cost producers around 2.35 billion DKK annually, which will finance the collection, sorting, and recycling of the material.

Facts about Recipo

Recipo is the leading partner in the Nordic region for producer responsibility for electronics and batteries and has similar collaborations in Sweden and Finland to make it easier for electronics-selling companies to comply with legal requirements across the Nordic market and take responsibility for functional recycling.
