Product responsibility on textiles coming up
The latest EU textile strategy mentions the producer responsibility for textiles as an important element in reducing textile waste in Europe. There are not yet concrete decisions in this area, but the proposal is now being discussed in the EU with a view to introduce producer responsibility within this area across the entire EU.
At VANA, we follow the development closely and keep up to date, both in the EU and internationally, so we are ready to help our members handle the producer responsibility on textiles as well.
In this connection, we have been on an inspirational visit to SIPtex at Sysav in Malmö together with our Nordic partner, Grønt Punkt Norge AS, to explore the sorting plant, which is the result of an innovation project with SYSAV, owned by 14 Swedish municipalities.
Capacities and functions of the sorting plant
- Sorts in colour and material by use of infrared scanners adapted to the industry
- Processes more than 20,000 tons of textile annually
- Receives textile from both industry and consumers.
Fun fact about quality and quantity in the Nordic region
The visit to Sysav also revealed that the quality of clothing in the Nordic region makes sorting and recycling easier. However, despite this revelation we are facing large amounts of textile waste due to the Nordic region's and the rest of Europe's significant consumption of fast fashion.
As a VANA member, you are guaranteed up-to-date knowledge of legislation and obligations on the producer responsibility – also on textiles.
